How does licensing in the cloud work?

This article is being updated. Please be aware the content herein, not limited to version numbers and slight syntax changes, may not match the output from the most recent versions of Bright. This notation will be removed when the content has been updated.

Licenses

A license for Bright Cluster Manager has two attributes that are important in this context:

  • Pre-paid nodes:
  • Max Pay-per-use nodes
Pre-paid pricing

The pre-paid node count is the number of nodes that may be started without incurring any additional charges. For Bright licensing it is irrelevant whether nodes are on-premise or off-premise (i.e. in a cloud). A license with a pre-paid node count of 100, will allow a user to start e.g. 80 nodes on-premise and 20 nodes in the cloud.

Pay-per-use pricing

It is possible to add nodes to a cluster in excess of the pre-paid node count and pay for them by the node hour. To do this, the product key of the cluster must be associated with a Customer Portal account. In addition, the cluster must be able to reach burst.brightcomputing.com on TCP port 443. The value of the max pay-per-use node attribute in the license determines the number of nodes that may be started using pay-per-use pricing. For pay-per-use pricing, Bright again does not distinguish between on-premise and off-premise nodes. For example, on a license with pre-paid node count set to 100, it is possible to start 150 physical on-premise nodes. In this example 50 nodes will be charged for by the hour.Details on pay-per-use pricing can be found in the Customer Portal (‘Prices’ under Burst in the menu).

Cluster-on-demand pricing

For Cluster-on-demand clusters (i.e. clusters that are started entirely in the cloud) that are created using the Customer Portal, users have the choice of using pay-per-use pricing or pre-paid pricing, or a combination of both. To use pay-per-use pricing, select ‘New Product Key’ in the form. To use pre-paid pricing (for at least part of the cluster), purchase a product key by contacting sales, and fill it into the form when creating a cluster on demand cluster.
